JIM ELLINGER Austin Airwaves The ART FM Radio Pioneer Award recognizes individuals who transcend traditional uses of radio to discover new possibilities in broadcasting. Due to his great work in bringing community radio to remote and sometimes devistated parts of the world, is an honor to recognize JIM ELLINGER of Austin Airwaves as the recipient of the 2017 Radio Pioneer Award. Jim has traveled to over 20 countries including Borneo, Tunisia, and Mozambique installing community and public safety stations. During Hurricane Katrina, his nonprorit organization Austin Airwaves receieved a permit from the FCC to establish a public safety station for families sheltering in the Astrodome. Subsequently, Austin Airwaves traveled to Hati and helped the first radio stations get back on air to provide community information amidst the earthquake devestation. At the bidding of artist Issa Nyaphaga, Jim recently traveled to Cameroon where he lead the installation of solar powered Radio Taboo-- the first station within the remote village of Nditam. On October 26th, 2017, Jim returned to Texas to successfully build KTIM 89.1 FM a community radio station serving LaGrange, Texas. The adventures of "Radio Jim" Ellinger never cease to amaze. He is a legend in his own day and he has built a lasting legacy of radio-activated communities around the world. Because he embraces the power of radio and brings and places it in the hands of people worldwide, ART FM is proud to honor Mr. Jim Ellinger with the 2017 Radio Pioneer Award.
