FRIEDA WERDEN WINGS: Women's International News Gathering Service Frieda Werden began producing feminist news radio at the Longhorn Radio Network in 1973. She while working as at a Public Radio station San Francisco in 1986, she co-founded WINGS: Women's International News Gathering Service -- an all-woman independent radio production company that compiles and distributes news and current affairs programs by and about women around the world. The program aired through NPR nationwide until Werden determined that she preferred the freedom and intensity community radio offered. In the past three decades, Werden has carved a space for women's voices and women's in radio broadcasting that did not exist before. Frieda Werden currently lives in Canada and distributes WINGS to over 100 radio stations worldwide. Frieda served as President of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) and, in 2015, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the organization. She was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian National Campus and Community Radio Association. She served on the Task Force for Gender Issues at the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). She is included in the book Feminists Who Changed America and the Frieda Werden Papers are held on file at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas. The ART FM Board of Directors is proud to grant the 2019 ART FM Radio Pioneer Award to Frieda Werden of WINGS for her work in amplifying the voices of female reporters around the world. 2019 ART FM RADIO PIONEER AWARD CEREMONY Grassroots Radio Conference Rochester, NY October 6, 2018 LINKS Wikipedia: Frieda Werden WINGS: Women's International News Gathering Service Frieda Werden interview on WINGS Earshot: WINGS Around the World Frieda Werden speaks to WDRT The Frieda Werden Archive at the University of Texas |
