Duke's Car Club is widely considered the world's oldest lowriding club daiting back to Los Angeles in the early 1960s. Sacramento Academic and Vocational Academy (SAVA) is a seventh- to twelfth-grade public charter school in Sacramento, California. In 2023, they launched the EV Lowrider Conversion Project as part of its Advanced Automotive Technologies pathway. Funded by grants and partner donations, students began transforming a ’64 Chevy Impala into a fully electric vehicle through hands-on learning, field trips, and support from local agencies who provided EV components. The project bridges clean-energy innovation with the cultural legacy of lowriders in Sacramento’s Latino communities, offering students a unique opportunity to engage in both automotive technology and cultural history while preparing for careers in clean energy.
